VYOMINI : What different colors symbolize in the Indian culture



Colors form an integral part of our existence right from the time we are born; 
Pink for a baby girl and Blue for a baby boy,
Colors we choose for painting the walls of our homes,
Colors in food that are symbolic of appetite,
Colors in the national flags of countries, each with a unique meaning, and we can go on and on!

With so much color in our lives, it is quite obvious that our apparels will also be a sea of hues, each for a different occasion and with a different meaning. Indian culture is not complete without the mention of the beautiful wonder called Saree. Saree and colors, an exciting combination indeed, isn’t it?
So let us try and understand today what different colors symbolize when it comes to the Indian culture.

                                                  RED

An ode to saree colors will be incomplete without the mention of this exquisite hue. The lovely Indian bride will vouch for how much she loves this color. Since time immemorial, red has been associated with love and considered as an essential part of being a wife in Indian culture. Graceful and a class apart  is the color red for you.

                                           YELLOW

The color yellow symbolizes warmth, growth, and prosperity. Whether the harvest festival of Baisakhi, or the lovely mustard-laden fields during Basant Panchami,both are embodiments of what the yellow color represents. Likewise, many Maharashtrian women are also known to wear yellow colored sarees on religious occasions in the family

In the long list of saree colors, white is one hue that depicts serenity and peace. Often worn as a symbol of fresh beginnings, white-colored sarees find favor with women in many parts of India. How often have we seen a Bengali newly wed on the television, or even in cinema, wearing that lovely white saree with a beautiful red-golden border. White is one color that has a very calming influence and hence is very popular in India.

Gone are the days when black was associated with the gloomy and dark side of things. In contemporary times, black is one of the trendiest hues when it comes to saree colors. A representative of power and elegance, black sarees are just the perfect choice for evening or night parties and family functions. Team it up with a golden blouse, and your black saree will make you stand out in a crowd.

An evergreen epitome of femininity that is pink for you. An Indian woman’s wardrobe will always be incomplete without a pink saree to boast of. Pink is soothing to the eyes and represents everything we would associate with being a dainty woman. Major causes such as breast cancer awareness are also associated with the pink color.

Green represents nature in its purest form. It is considered to be a source of energy and regeneration. It is synonymous with our environment and denotes the harmony in which all living creatures should exist. Many environmental initiatives also use the color green as the underlying theme. A green colored saree in your closet depicts your proximity to nature and is great for wearing on routine days, as also on special occasions.
